I took photos at the sibs carnival this past saturday. I've never actually used a digital rebel so I was excited to finally do so. well, I mean I've used it to download and delete photos off of it, just never taking pictures. Most of them came out decent:
I designed all of those signs/graphics too. I got a really sweet logo I made for the upcoming EXAM JAM that I'm quite happy with. :)
I'm going to see Jeff Klein tomorrow night. I'm going to see Joseph Arthur in slightly under a week. A bunch of other awesome crap has been/is happening. Things are superb!
Thursday I can either go to the Ludacris show or go to the Hot Rod Circuit/Limbeck show and get in for free and have backstage access. I wonder which show I'll go to...
I love working at the Rec Center. Seriously everyone there is so nice and friendly it's crazy. I love my little office and my 2 computers. I actually turned on the computer I haven't used today just for fun. I work my own hours and have a ton of freedom which is amazing. It's not even anything hard for me to do... I just sit and update the site and I'm working on a video right now and another over break I think. I haven't used Adobe Premiere since television communications in high school (I was the only one in my class that got to learn it) but I quickly picked it back up. I think they're impressed I actually work lol. I got to sit in 2 meetings this week... the regular Tuesday meeting and a "so you think you can dance?" metting. I got my own bulletin board to decorate!!!!!!!
So glad this semister is over. It's been a fairly crappy semister. I got a motion pictures final which is nothin' and a microeconomics final that is somethin'. The roads were nasty as fuck when I was on my way home... I slid around my neighborhood for kicks... I hope I didn't bump into any curbs... I came real close.
I just got back a bunch of rolls of film I took in to get developed (I really need a new digital... I'm looking into it), here are a bunch of random photos. I ain't puttin' them in a LJ cut either so deal.
joseph arthur hometown show a few weeks ago... pretty damn awesome show the Portugal The Man singer/guitarist... cool as hell, he was suprised that both Aryka and I were buying their CD instead of buying one and burining it. He then told me to feel free to burn it and pass copies around to my friends which I thought was pretty damn cool. My les paul after the modifications: matching custom knobs, new crunchy paff pickup thing, new nickel tuners (can't see) Jarrod Gorbel (The Honorary Title) and I from a week and a half ago. Jarrod was really cool, I talked to him right when he got off stage and he had to leave somewhere and said he'd be right back and he actually did come back. I forgot I took pics at the final Indie Youngstown show... too bad IY is gone because they would have looked nice on the site or something and too bad they're losers cuz they ain't getting any of them.
Yeah I said I wouldn't update here anymore but I don't have a new blog to write in yet. Sue me.
This week went by fast sort of. Monday night, Aryka and I went to see The Honorary Title and Portugal The Man at the Grog. We got there shortly after the doors opened and there were a bunch of kids sitting on the stage waiting to catch a glimpse of Jarrod probally. We're smart and stood towards the side where the bands enter the stage from. Portugal The Man was fucking amazing live. Their singer/guitarist is sorta short. THT really put on the best set I've seen them play so far. Afterwards, I talked to Jarrod right as he walked off, he said he'd be right back and actually did come back and Aryka and I got a picture and shit. Then we walked over to the merch area and talked to the singer from Portugal and we both bought a copy of their CD and he was really amazed we weren't gona just buy one and burn a copy for the other person. He also told us to burn copies and give them to friends. That was really cool of him I thought.
Some days are a blur and I don't have much to say.
Thanksgiving was alright, my moms tard brother didn't come over which was fine with me. We really don't have any family around here that is living... most live in Cleveland, New Jersey, elsewhere. Those are from my moms side as my dad doesn't talk to anyone on his side. Saw Gil Mantera's Fucking Party Dream and Grand Buffet put on kick ass sets. I'd like to see them do that 2bulkaine shit again for fun. I'll be seeing Party Dream and GB at the Lime Spider and probally Grog in a few weeks.
Yeah, so my computer never had any firewire ports so I bought a firewire card and it came in the mail today. I'm so proud of myself for not fucking my computer up. Here is a clip from the final Indie Youngstown show. Wasn't a bad show, but wasn't exactly fun for those of us behind the scenes.
This week was lame. Gona go see The Honorary Title for the third time and Portugal The Man for the first time this Monday... pretty pumped for that.
I registered for spring... the plan was to register classes with friends but that went out when I saw a lot of good classes were already filled so I said fuck that I'm just gona take what I want when I want. I still got a pretty good schedule even though it took a little playing around to do.
I think this job I got will be pretty sweet. I'll have some money to buy neat crap. I'm starting to think that maybe I will never get into booking shows again. maybe. I have plans to PLAY shows... but I don't really care to book anymore. It's no longer appealing to me and the work goes unappreicated.
so yeah... it's a four day weekend for me (I'm off Mondays, off tomorrow)!!
I got offered what seems to be a badass job this afternoon at the rec center. It is all stuff I am good at doing too... it's a marketing position that involves maintaining and updating their website (I've been making these things since middle school), making commercials (I just happen to know Premier from high school... I was the only one in my class that got to learn it and I was damn good at it), and just helping people if they have any questions with whatever. Bad news is I can't be on the Penguin Productions board since I'll be a paid YSU employee then (I had to attend an interview for Penguin Productions yesterday afternoon with a boardroom full of people asking me questions). Good news is I'll be getting paid (with increases as I have more job duties and time into it), eventually have my own office, extremely flexible hours, etc. From what it sounds... I'd be completely insane to turn this down.
I guess I'm on the Doghouse Records street team now, I applied to be on it a while back and today they sent a package with some posters and shit. I've sorta missed hanging up posters on campus and elsewhere. I'm still waiting on some American Apparel shirts I ordered to come in the mail. I really never knew how nice those shirts are till I bought a Gil Mantera's Party Dream one at the show a few weeks ago. a90wfue90ajwf[ap.
This weeked was pretty damn borring (except for the Joseph Arthur show).
The Joseph Arthur show last night was really amazing. Actually, more refreshing than anything. I haven't been to a good show in months (not counting the 2bulkaine show... that was completely badass) and this show more than made up for the lack of good shows. The show probally sold out because it was completely packed. We got there at about 8:30 and there were a bunch of people just standing around already but we got right up and stood in front of the stage, then some others followed. I guess it pays to not follow anyone else sometimes. There was a band that opened that wasn't too bad but not to my liking. The Joseph Arthur set (with his full band) lasted about 2 hours roughly. Everyone got off stage after what would be a normal set then Joseph came back on and did 2 or 3 solo acoustics then the band came back and they played a whole other set. Plus he had this broom with a bunch of toilet paper rolls on the stick and a leaf blower and blew the toilet paper at the crowd. Crazy.
Two people came up to me thinking I was someone else. Someone named Kennieth I think. On the walk to the venue, I overheard a drug deal goin on in front of a bank. On the drive to Akron, I saw a deer "sleeping" on the side of the road and I cut off a firetruck. I left akron a lot later than estimated. It was a rather eventful night to say the least.
I didn't take this picture, someone else posted it on his Myspace. I did take a bunch of photos that I will post in the next few days. Give me time to get them developed because I am crazy and still prefer shooting stuff with my 35mm SLR.
I'm going up to Akron tonight to see Joseph Arthur at the Lime Spider. I'm pretty pumped for this show considering I've been a fan for many years now... slightly before he became mega popular from that song he got played on The OC. I'm sure I'll get to say a few words to him, I always manage to talk to nearly every musician I see. I doubt I'll get lost thanks to using Google Earth/Maps.
I don't know what I would do without Google sometimes...
I was getting a haircut today but slept in till almost 1 so decided against it. I'll get one tomorrow after classes. I found a fuckin sweet hairstyle in the newest issue of Stuff that I like. A little change but not too different.
Fun halloween weekend. I already mentioned how badass the show Friday was. Saturday I went to Jessicas party which was fun... saw some people I haven't seen in a while. I didn't really drink since I was driving and I'm crazy like that. Pat sure was wasted and trying to mack on every girl there with no luck. I'm proud of myself for getting out of the driveway without banging into anything because there were cars on 3 sides haha. Moss wanted me to go to Shenanigans but I said fuck that. Last night Moss wanted me to go to Shenanigans because he was going again with some co workers, dressed up as gangstas and he was going as Superman. I'm sure that was AWESOME. I was up till 3 or 4 writing out notecards for writing because I forgot about them and I'm tired. I'm just gona watch horror movies. Marilyn Manson is going to be on Lenno tonight!!!!!!!! Conan is going to have an all skeleton show! I'm gona watch AMC too!!!!
all I gotta say about that 2bulkaline grand buffet/gil mantera show is WOW. one of the funnest shows i've been to in a long time. my voice is raw and my ears are ringing... that's how you know if a show was good or bad. I got pics with Jackson and Gil... look for them on the myspace sometime later today or whenever sarah sends me them. I've seen these bands a shitload of times but never really talked to any of them but I did tonight. It was packed... we got there a little after 9 so we were up in the front and shit. we stopped at Deals before the show and I bought some sunglasses and this crazy cop shit and I wore parts of it. after the show i drank this red bull some random person gave me on campus last week that has been sitting in my car and blasted Girl Talk through the hood on the way back to the suburbs of Boardman and Poland.
Things have been rather crazy lately. I got a call yesterday from the lady that was one of the people in charge of organizing the battle of the bands and she told me about this marketing job opening up next semister which is awesome. I'm not sure what it involves other than marketing and updating the rec center site but sounds neat. Hopefully I'll be on the Penguin Productions board too (at the time I turned my application in I think there were 3 or 4 applications in... so changes are probally good). I'm also on the quest to find a cool part time job away from the computer right now. I applied the other day at a few places online and Coldstone called me back the next day. What the fuck was I thinking... I don't wanna sing gay shit and dance.
I don't think I'll be booking any shows till spring. I got too much going on right now to be wasting all my time and energy for that shit. I haven't changed my stance on organizing all ages shows either. I don't like the bar scene here too much anymore... sorry but there are very few local bands I'd go out to see these days.
I happen to have decent writing skills. I have discovered this last year I think because I haven't recieved anything less than an A on any essay... actually I still haven't to this day. I have a very hard writing professor right now too. A good portion of the class has dropped and I got A's on 2 of the 3 papers... just this final one is all I have left. I'm planning on writing a book starting winter break and probally writing on and off till spring break. It will be self published (professionally printed... I came across a place that does a nice job reasonably). I don't want to say much about it right now.
Tomorrow is going to be possibly the best show in a long time. Grand Buffet + Party Dream + on stage at the same time = nuts. Speaking of Nyabinghi, I noticed someone bought it. I certianly wouldn't have used the "Buy It Now" button. I mean Nyabinghi is great and all but I don't know. I'll be in Akron the 6th to see Joseph Arthur... that's going to be amazing!
I've been in the "transfer-to-another-university-because-everyone-in-this-area-is-miserable-and-depressing" state of mind again lately. Staying on campus T/Th from 8-1:30 and W/F at noon-2 and going home is hardly real campus life. I'll still give it till the rest of the year for something to happen.
The battle of the bands yesterday went really good I thought. There were no problems I was aware of at all, which anyone that has been in a band or been involved with the production of shows knows that technical and other difficulties are quite possible. Hubbard Music does a good job with sound... they had no problems going from a 11 piece to hardcore to rap to rock to jam. The weater was great too, I actually got sunburned! The Zou won, no suprise there. I ranked We Famous my highest because I thought they put on a fun show that seemed to be enjoyed by everyone and I think Youngstown Brass Co. because I was impressed they were technically good and learned originals in about 2 weeks. I think A Fistful of Dollars might have been too hard for the general audience and I didn't really like Penteberry Jam... just not my thing. One dude from Fistful is actually in my writing class which is cool and I finally got to meet D-Town (local rapper who did a guest appearance in the We Famous set) at the show.
If it was up to me, I would do a Battle of the Bands on the Friday night before the game, that way everyone would not have conflicting issues with tailgating and other pre-football events. Don't get me wrong, the attendance was good but it could have been even better if thousands of people weren't standing around the parking lot eating hot dogs and drinking beer. Parking also seemed like an issue for people just wanting to go to the battle and not the football game. I think just doing a Friday night event from like 6-10 or something would be better and the winner could still be announced durring half time at the game the next day.
hmm... a lot has been going on lately, a lot is about to happen. saturday is the battle of the bands, i gotta wake up at fuckin 6am to be there at 7. that sucks, but i'm a celeb judge, probally gona have a walkie talkie and going to slam t shirts into the crowd durring half time so that more than makes up for it haha.
I'm looking forward to halloween weekend. the friday there will be this crazy show with party dream/grand buffet at nyabinghi. it's going to be dope. then saturday jessica is throwing a sweet party and rumor has it I may be dressing up like a pimp or gangsta with crunk cup and the works.
november 18th I'll be seeing say anything with aryka. I've never really listened to them, aryka just said i'm going no matter what haha, but should be a fun time. I'll be seeing margot and the nuclear so and so's/the elected the 30th of this month with her as well. I'm pumped for that show. dan andriano from alkaline trio is doing a few solo shows and I'll be at the one in pittsburgh on november 7. I was originally planning on going to the cleveland show... but another found self is somehow opening that show. I love the grog and all but what the fuck are they thinking?! ohh and I think party dream/grand buffet are playing nyabinghi again on thanksgiving... they haven't announced it but it's on nyabinghi's calendar so we'll see.
I got an A on my writing paper. I really thought I was going to get a D- because I was worried I didn't paraphrase one part to her standards. my writing professor isn't liked very much... she has a C- rating on the myspace grade my professor. I kick ass.
I don't understand why so many girls feel the need to get all kinds of huge tattoos allover their bodies. Don't get me wrong, I like tattoos as long as they are creative and tasteful... but I just don't get some of them. Those tattoos all over your stomach/back/etc aren't going to look very good in a few years. My suggestion is think long and hard about it and don't just pick out any stupid design hanging on the walls! Have a part in the design process and make sure you are 100% satasfied with it before it is inked on your body. I stumbled upon this televion show recently called Miami Ink and I actually like it.
This weekend was lousy. Next weekend should be sweet. I'm not too excited about waking up at 6am Saturday but that will most likely be a fun time. Mother f'n celeb judge and who knows what else!!! Then I got asked if I wanted to go see Paul Oakenfold that evening and I am pretty sure I will go, sounds like a wild & crazy time.I'm sure other things will go down this weekend also.
I really don't understand people in this area sometimes. Everyone seems to bitch that there is never anything to do in this area and when something DOES happen... no one cares! This doesn't just apply to music but really anything. It also seems that all these people that bitch don't do anything to try to change what they are bitching about and expect someone else to step up and do it. I guess perhaps all the smart people really do leave eventually...
Well tonight didn't go exactly according to plan. Aryka wanted to go to Cedars and I was just gona meet her there at 10:30 which was fine. turns out she had a family problem with her grandfather and wasn't able to make it. I later found out he had a heart attack and she needed to be there so that is understandable. I need to get a new cellphone. Ran into a bunch of cool people, Elin!, Matt, Ian, 2 dudes from A Dramatic Ending, and a couple others. Ran into a few I'd rather not have but what can you do. Ian's band was pretty good I thought. Elin left right after Ian's band and since I was only there for Aryka and also Ian's band, I left two or so songs into War's set. It was akward for me even being there.
I might be going back out tonight for a sorta party.... or maybe I'll just stay in and watch TV. haven't decided.
Today was a long day... got to campus at 10:30 to meet up with Aryka. hanged out, went to Butler art, etc. Noon motion pictures class till 1:45 then hanged around Kilcawaly (Bundy) Hall till my 3:00 battle of the bands meeting. Today everyone just argued about what bands should make the cut because there was some arguments over it. I really didn't have much to say because both bands they were arguing about really aren't going to make or break the show.
I wasn't really planning on going to the Cedars show tonight since... umm... I am no longer involved with Indie Youngstown or anything, but I'll be there. I had conflicting feelings on attending. I forgot I told Aryka I'd take her to it last week. I haven't seen Ian in quite some time. His new band Mimic is going to be opening the show. A lot of people have been asking me why I quit IY over one bad show and I didn't quit it because of that show. The show did have a part in it... when I posted Myspace bulletins about it being an important show, I wasn't kidding. There has been a lot of shit going on with people basing IY because apparently we only book and promote indie rock bands, we only promoted a handful of bands, we steal babies, etc. Basically, I'm gona take the rest of this year to sit back and reflect on what I want to accomplish. I will be back to booking shows late winter under a new production name. Bigger and better shows in fact. See if Youngstown Local Music or any of the other sites/Myspaces that popped up recently will do a better job than what IY did.
I dunno how I feel about Tom Green's internet show. I watched a few times a week when it was brand new up until the Daquiri show I think. He's not that great of a talk show host. He's not that great at anything these days really.
